What To Wear In 2014

Get ahead of the fashion pack this year, instead of lagging behind, by adding these fresh trends hot off the runway to your list of new years resolutions, to transform your wardrobe from 2013 to now.

Bags: Say goodbye to your oversized ‘IT’ satchel (a la Celine and 3.1 Phillip Lim) nestled in the crook of your elbow, and hello to the daytime clutch. The after hours staple is fast moving into daylight with countless spotting’s of the strap-free bags, from extremely oversized leather bundles to dressy, compact cases.

Boots: Thigh high boots are back and in a big way. Today’s take on the thigh-high trend is totally chic, not totally cheap. Ankle boots -although easy to wear with just about anything, are unfortunately getting close to the end of their fashion used by date.

Coats: Pea Coats and belted trenches are a thing of the past ever since Kim K stepped out in her hugely oversized boyfriend coat – post-engagement to Kayne. Evolving from the boyfriend blazer, the coat equivalent gives us good reason to embrace our masculinity and opt for a more tailored look. Characterized by its boxier shape, elongated pockets and often, but not always, double-breasted lapel.

Colour theory: Going from one extreme to the next is what fashion does best. Hence why we have gone from viewing fashion in the whole myriad of the rainbow with the popular colour-blocking trend, to going back in time and looking at things in plain black and white. This monochrome palette is timeless and easy to wear, so pick a colour and stick to it!

Sweaters: The turtleneck is back and it is this winters must have item. The classic staple can be difficult to convince of its style factor but once you see the countless celebrities donning the chunky high neck sweater you will be an instant fan once again. Not to mention, extremely warm.

Hats: Everybody loves a good comeback story, and the newsboy cap is definitely making its way back onto the fashion radar this year. Perfect to stay warm during the colder months or to simply add the perfect finish to a masculine inspired ensemble. FYI – Leather Baseball caps are so last year!

Heels: Mules – the once signature shoe also commonly known as the open heeled shoe, have appeared on countless runways during fashion week with a youthful makeover. And oh so much easier to slip into than lace up heels.

Skirts: Midi length is back! Hooray! Last year was all about the asymmetric envelope mini but this year it’s all about the midi skirt. The forgiving length is extremely flattering not to mention totally chic with a slim pair of heels and form fitting top tucked in.

Jeans: It seems skinny leg jeans have been around for almost forever. But there is a new jean ‘kid on the block.’ The close relative of the skinny – the straight leg jean, but with a twist – cropped and fabulous.

Sneakers: We thought fashion had finally given us a comfortable blessing by making wedge sneakers totally trendy. Well guess what? We’re about to be even more blessed from above with high top sneakers becoming the next big trend for shoes. Talk about pumped up kicks!

Pants: If 2013 was all about the track pant, then 2014 is all about the leather trouser. The elastic featured waist of last seasons’ pant has stuck around, but with an ultra modern, leather twist. A perfect balance of elegant vs. edgy and a great investment item as it can be taken from the lounge room to the bar, or literally anywhere in between.

Layering: wrapping jackets, flannels or jumpers around the waist was big last year. This season were going for a fresher approach taking the top-tying upstairs, around the shoulders this season in fact, for a more preppy look. Drape it around to the side or have it swooping around the neck – you can’t go wrong with how you make this look work.

Showing skin: Crop tops baring midriffs were the cream of the crop last season, but this season it’s all about the exposure of the décolletage. Get inspired by Sandy’s classic off the shoulder bad girl look in Grease. Dare to bare.

Flats: Swap fashion staple ballet flats for the new edgier pointed toe loafers. Still comfortable to wear, these shoes are the perfect streamlined addition to any outfit. Go on, slip into something sharp.

Earrings: Before you let those multiple pierced holes in your ears from your angsty tean years close up, wait! Adorning the ear with multiple small studs is back this year, as opposed to the chunky adorned statement earrings of last.

Shirt styling: Tucking in (or should I say half tucking in) tops was a big trend for 2013. But this season there is likely to be a complete 360 of shirt styling with long and loose layering of tops creeping making a fast comeback on the fashion radar.

Pants hem: To hem or not to hem? This season it’s all about letting yourself go a bit, with casual effortless dressing the way to go. I’m talking cropped jeans with unfinished hems in a slighter looser fit than the tight fitting skinnies that have been around for too long in my eyes. Make sure to pair with heels to avoid looking too ‘let go’ and dumpy.
