It is hard to imagine what the fashion industry looked like prior to 2004, when the Alice McCall vision was born. With its girlish charm and bohemian flare, the distinctive eponymous label injected Australian fashion with refreshingly eclectic designs and striking silhouettes. Since then the brand has rapidly become a coveted name in the fashion world, securing its place as a successful and wearable brand both locally and internationally. And there is no looking back.
With MBFWA just around the corner, we thought it was only fitting that we caught up with the extremely talented Alice McCall herself to find out what we can expect from her upcoming collection. Because let’s face it, when it comes to Australian Fashion Week, Alice McCall is the show everyone wants to see.
In the past, Alice McCall shows and collections have been heavily theme based and very unique in their offering, although always staying true to their signature look. Last year the brand celebrated it’s 10th anniversary, ushering in a new era for the brand that is known to push boundaries, so it is no wonder we are all dying to see what the latest collection will have on offer.
We are excited to see your latest collection at MBFWA this year. What can we expect to see at your show?
A variety of silhouettes from voluminous ruffles to synched high-waists and contrasting body contouring. It all plays well together with the divine set that brings you into the fantastical land of Alice.
Have you partnered with any artists for the set design of this year’s show?
We have artist Daimon Downey to design the set. Downey’s created a magical set of magnified proportions playing on Alice in Wonderland when she drank the potion. Mark Vassallo will be the stylist for the show as we worked so well together last year.
What was the main inspiration behind the latest collection? Tell us more about it.
The main inspiration was the music, rhythm and romance and how that translates into clothes. Loved the Bob Marley quote ““One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain.”
You have been in the business for 11 years, what advice can you give to brands showing for the first time at MBFWA this year?
To be instinctive and true to their inspiration in order to create a unique DNA.
You were an international stylist for 10 years before Alice McCall label was born, what are your top styling tips?
Know what works well with your physique and be true to your own aesthetic – you’ll always feel most confident in something you love. A great leather jacket goes well with almost everything.
What is the best lesson you have learned along the way?
You need a great team behind you.
Who are your favourite muses, is there anyone who you haven’t had a chance to meet or dress that you would like to?
My muses have always been a 70’s Carine Roitfeld and Vanessa Paradis – I love their French style. Would love to dress Solange Knowles.
What are some of your biggest dreams that you are yet to fulfil?
I’m very happy with everything I’ve achieved so far – I’ve got beautiful kids and a successful label.
Tell us about the future plans for Alice McCall, what’s next for one of our favourite Australian brands?
We’re aiming to open a few more retail boutiques and really expand our presence in the US and China.
