MBFWA 2015 Designer Interview Series | Ginger&Smart

Ginger and Smart is indeed one of Australia’s most loved labels. Since it’s inception in 2002 with its polished playful aesthetic, the brand has continued to go from strength to strength, firmly cementing its position at the top rung of the Australian fashion ladder. But the success of Ginger & Smart does not stop there.

With the incorporation of a lifestyle element into their brand in the form of a luxe spa collection, as well as a diffusion line ‘Akin by Ginger & Smart’, and a leather accessories line, which all work together in harmonious synergy to form a uniquely unanimous unit, the success of this Sydney based label just keeps climbing.

In the lead-up to Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia 2015, Genevieve & Alexandra Smart, the brains behind Ginger & Smart, took time out of their busy schedules to chat with us about their highly anticipated upcoming collection.

What can we expect to see at your show this year without giving away too much?

On the runway you can expect to see an array of textures that we’ve developed including laces that are a fossils of the prints we have designed.

What was the main inspiration behind the latest collection?

Our Latitude SS15 collection is driven by awakening to the fierce and fragile nature that surrounds us.

We are also excited to see your leather accessories at MBFWA show, what are some of your favourite accessories items in the latest collection?

Our graphic Crusader ankle bootie features a rose-gold heel and rubber treads that leave a sand dune impression as you walk.

You have been in the business for 13 years, what advice can you give to brands showing for the first time at MBFWA this year?

Stay true to your own creative aesthetic and find a real point of difference. And make sure you have funding to keep the dream alive.

What is the best lesson you have learned along the way?

Be kind to others and yourself.

Who are your favourite muses, is there anyone who you haven’t had a chance to meet or dress that you would like to?

We would like to dress Tilda Swinton or Lou Doillon.

In your opinion what are the pros and cons of running a family business?

The pros of a family business is the unwavering support for each other and the cons are drawing the line between business and family time.

What are some of your biggest dreams that you are yet to fulfil?

We hope to show our collection on the runway in Paris soon.
